@Exeter What they said! Go and do this with your mom. What you want to remember later in life is the memories you will make with her on this trip, not the fact that you worked at a fast food place and always made room for that job above anything else. Life is too short.

the only thing keeping me alive every single day is my medicine. Sometimes, I take it an hour late, and my whole day is ruined.

I think that's the best argument so far. I'm a little guilty about going out there with literally no money. It means I'll also be moving with no money and have no money when I get there.

I think you'll be able to find a way. And if you ever, somehow, really desperately needed money after getting out there and had no way of getting it, I wouldn't necessarily be against spotting you some money to help you however I can. You're a good person and you deserve this opportunity for a fresh start.

That's incredibly, unfathomably kind and I would absolutely never accept :p if my mom is dragging me off on an adventure she can help me get out west. My dad is 50 years old, works a good job, has no dependents, does not support anyone but himself, he can certainly help me get out to take him up on the offer he's been giving me for years now.

Yes @Exeter , you should go with your Mom.
Getting away will be not only a great experience, but also good to get away from your situation and think clearly about what you want. Plus having one on one support from your Mom, to help you make a sound decision bout you future.

my dad, being the technological retard that he is, managed to download and install some ransomware on his computer even after his antivirus software warned him about 5 times NOT to do it. as soon as I get in the door I get him blabbering faster than a child with ADHD on crack how I need to fix his computer for him. he hasn't backed anything up in 5 years. that computer is toast

My sympathies. Having to share a house with a technologically incompetent brother and parents, I also end up being the IT support of the place. Some of that ransomware can be nasty shit though, my sister got one on her laptop. Managed to get rid of it though, turned out just to be a Flash overlay that had a registry key activation on login.

Lucky you. I'm in the same situation ecept that don't want to admit that I know more about them.
So I'm like "look, if you just do.."
    "No!"
    Me: "I'm just trying-"
"I can do this myself!" They get frustarted, "Why doesn't this work."
    Me: "Can I-"
"Stop! I know whats wrong" He doesn't have the faintest idea. So I give up trying to help. Two minutes later he's calling tech support. And of course takes him 3 times to get it right, because he doesn't understand what their saying. I could have done this from the start. And it's stupid stuff ike asking what browser he's using. Response: "It's windows!" That's your OS... what's your browser? "Dell?"
    Face palm time.

The worst piece of shit is the one that encrypts all your files and then demands money in order for you to get the key to decrypt them. It's shit like this that made me switch over to Debian, plus the limitless options to make the OS truly yours. Been running a Linux variant for the last year and a half and every time I have to use a Windows box, I cringe.

I know how you folks feel, @scalie @AkaiKitsune @Willow . My brother fits the same bill and potentially even worse because of his attitude regarding it, browsing countless questionable sites and probably clicking and downloading god knows what. He runs effing McAfee too, courtesy of mom's job, so countless warnings on the legit stuff and few on the actually malicious sites and downloads.

Prior to '15, for a full year he had been having countless computer problems, and when dad finally came and took his 10 year old handmedown box apart and hooked up the HDD (since I got tired of trying to fix his issues only o get treated like shit and have glass bottles thrown at me for saying anything normal that he wants to take offense at), it turns out he managed to get a Gateway Virus. In other words, the kind that sneaks past your antivirus, wipes it's malware database and again on each update. If one of those gets past and does it's job, it doesn't matter how good your AV is, it's now worth shit as far as protecting your PC. He had countless crap software injected into his PC because of that.

And yet, only a month later, he's asking me to fix things again. He thinks that by having 10 cached webpages, or 10 fully loaded ones, I'm bogging down "his" internet. He bitches at me to stop listening to music on Pandora and tries to justify how it's preventing him from playing Battlefield 4 or War Thunder.

I'd happily learn to use a Linux build, and never touch Windows again.....if it weren't for the fact that half of nobody makes their software or games for Linux. It's all Windows, and sometimes Mac. Be nice if Microsoft and Apple bit the bullet or had some kind of blackout for a while so that people would HAVE to make Linux distributions.
