I'm not sure if this is possible using XenForo engine... But having a possibility of an animated gif as avatar, both full-size and miniature, would be really cool and many users would probably appreciate that. Of course while saving the animated part, because AFAIK .gifs can be uploaded, but they won't animate at all.

I'm actually against gifs as avatars. For me they feel as too distracting.

I agree with Yog, they are too distracting. Also, I don't want my computer/phone trying to load gifs every time I go to a new page.

I'm all for it. I don't find them distracting, and it adds another level of customization and creativity to profiles, and allows users to be more easily recognized.

Tossing my lot in with yog and Murphy
Gifs are fun and all but they do jack up load times, I also find them distracting and I'm not calling this person out I swear but on the old forums there was a user that had an animated gif of a woman tit f*kin a guys peen which is a problem when I'm browsing the sfw sections

That is a good point, some people did miss use them. NSFW avatars are ok, but animating them makes them much more eye-catching, and most likely more NSFW.

Personally I dislike them. Subtle-animated ones wouldn't be too bad. But for some reason when people are able to use animated avatars, they're over the top Flishy-flashy trigger-happy and over 2Mb big. Same goes for signatures in my opinion.. Usually way to long or full of useless junk pictures. ("this is your ip!" "you are using windows 98" LIKE I DIDN'T KNOW!) But then again, I disabled them entirely...

IF they would be enabled, please let there be an option to load them statically. Or disable them completely. (like the signatures now)

I would love the option, at least, for gif avatars. Avatars on this forum aren't huge or anything, so honestly, I don't see why it should be a huge issue.

This is a good point. Anyone satellite internet has a data cap, so a shitton of gifs would really wreck that.

there is a balance. a light gif (maybe ~30 frames) of simple animation is easy. like blinking or some movement. my icon on the old forum bobbed, blinked and had an animated tail flame; around 20 frames and a few hundred/1K KB.

there are those icons that are flashy are annoying, and those that are NSFW themselves. we could always implement a modding sort of thing to watch for overly flashy stuff, the community is small enough at this point. dont know if that will work well when it gets bigger.

I dunno. Personally I think gifs as avatars can be fun, but most people upload ones that are very distracting. I don't mind when it's like blinking or snowing or whatever but when it flashes through multiple pictures or is generally moving a great deal, it gets cluttered.

Maybe if gifs only moved when the picture was full size? Like when you click on someone's avatar and it pulls up the preview of their page, if that's when the gif moved. But that also means you can be stuck with a weird frame when it's small.

But yeah, personally I'm not a fan of the loading times or the distracting-ness of gifs. And in relation to what @Icestar said, there's not really a way to moderate what gifs would be acceptable and what ones wouldn't. There's not like... a measure of flashiness lol.

For the moment this wont happen as it requires compiling a different image handler for the web server, happy to reconsider in the future.

I don't suppose there might be some way to have a "homepage" image, for your profile? Something with far fewer restrictions and unrelated to your avatar, so you could make it as big and animated as you want? Might be a way to make everyone happy.
