Yep, you have to insert a coin to release the cart and it's given back to you once you put it back in place.

Well in here it used to be like that too, but sometime ago all of the shopping carts everywhere were modified to not require a coin anymore. But they still have those slots for them left :D

Yes, you need a coin to get them as they all have a lock on them, you get your coin back after you put it back.

Not really cause you use your currency coins to operate them and it will only cost you if don't put it back in place. And if you do that somebody else will and get the money .

It's an effective strategy here in Canada, because they usually take Loonies or Toonies, so its generally considered enough money to warrant putting the cart in the proper area and getting your money back.

Here in Sweden we use that coin system on shopping carts pretty much everywhere. I'd say it works pretty well as it's a rare sight seeing a shopping cart on the loose outside a store.

All this talk of shopping carts reminds me of a time in high school when we went to a nearby Walmart during lunch break and grabbed a bunch of shopping carts, brought them back to school, and played "shopping cart football."

The roaming pack of shopping carts and their natural hunting grounds.

I feel like here in the US, it wouldn't matter if it cost a nickel to use shopping carts, people will still leave them out in the parking lot, or won't return them in general.

I had an image of an injured shopping cart in a parking spot. The predator car approaches going in for the kill, then the rest of the pack of shopping carts surround the car.

Yeah, US currency wouldn't make the coin operated strategy work. No one is goin to care that much about a quarter .

Agreed. On the other hand...I wonder if this would encourage other people to put your cart back, and the end result is the same: clean lots. Picture being a 5 year old kid and finding a loose shopping cart: gold!!

Exactly what I was doing as a child when they introduced the system for the first time and habits where stronger than the greed.

Ughhhh.... City inspectors are ridiculous. I'm on a job site in a hospital and we've set up a hoarding which has to be inspected before we can begin work. She initially said shed be here at 10:30... Then changed to noon.... It's now 10 after 1 and she still isn't here and hasn't contacted us yet. I like having time to check the forums and such as much as the next person, but I also like to get work done while I'm on the clock. It's super frustrating that this seems to happen every single time.

The Aldi stores here have them. It cost a quarter to use but you get it back once you return it.
