The Video Game Thread

Wanted to give it a try. I've been playing a free to play MMO for a little bit, liking the idea, but not the world, visuals, or F2P aspects. So I thought I'd give the long lasting most popular one a try.

No but seriously, I'm coming to you when I finally save enough to build a gaming PC.

Speaking of which, how much should I save up to buy the components to build a gaming PC? XD

That depends, what do you need it to do?
I put probably ~1300 into mine at the start (and i've since thrown a lot more at it).
A basic rig that can run most stuff really well should be around 1000 bucks (no OS, monitor, keyboard, or mouse mind you). Now this will really only be good for the next 3-4 years at 1080p60 and you would probably need to drop down to medium settings on new games 4 years in.
And if all you want is to beat out the consoles you really only need ~500-600 however doing that is a bit of a death sentence imo, it usually leads to very little upgrade potential without completely scrapping an existing part, that's not the worst thing really but it's not a good thing.
And if you want to blow your penis off you can put 3000+ with custom liquid cooling, several GPU's, 64GB RAM, 32TB RAID 10 arrays (literally useless unless you're a data center btw). Some people have actually choosen parts for $50,000+ builds which is just funny

My rig is about 1.5 years old and still trucking just fine. But that's mainly because my main games are Minecraft and TF2 and I will not say I wasted any money at all, because I do a fair amount of video editing so having 16GB RAM, a GPU with 4GB VRAM, and an i7-4770K makes sense.

There are some people out there still running 5-6 year old rigs perfectly fine. With PC's you basically get as much as you put in (with diminishing returns of course).

Ah, damn. I don't mind going completely el-cheapo on the mouse and keyboard. I already have a decent wireless mouse for my laptop, and I can dig up some clickety-clack-ass keyboard from the closet if I need to. (correct me if these are actually bad ideas), but I didn't think about having to buy an OS. How much do those run, and how much should I spend on a monitor?

 

Eh, mouse and keyboard are a very personal choice. I can make recommendations but really if you can use it, then... well you can use it. OS for windows runs around 90-100 bucks, Linux distros are always free, and I have no idea about mac os. And for monitor I love the one I have currently (even though it's a weird size) it runs $170, it's a 1080p60 IPS monitor, and those are the exact search terms you want You can still find a good 23" 1080p60 IPS monitor for ~150 and even less if it's on sale.
The IPS just means slightly better colors and a wider range of useful veiw. IMO 23-27 inches is the best range for 1080p on a desk. And your going to want it to have at least 1 HDMI, DVI, or DisplayPort port, completely ignore VGA connectors because analog video is poop and should only be a last resort.

 

Damn, so I'm looking at about $1250, which I can only imagine will go up by the time I get there. Well, if my coworkers get sick a lot, I may be able to get that in five months. If not... I don't want to think about that. I may have to hide petri dishes around the front desk.

 

All depends on what you want to do, you can build a pretty damn good 'rig at around $800CAD, no joke. Even less if you're willing to grab second hand parts from people who are crazy and upgrade far more often then they need.

At that point if you're happy with your mouse and keyboard (that clickity-clack-ass keyboard is mechanical, and a joy to use), the only real other purchase you need is a monitor, which doesn't need to be a lot. So easily a rig and monitor for under a grand.

I'm currently in the process of building one for my parents which is currently around $800, and I could easily cut $200 off depending on what I want to do. Only catch is I'm giving them one of my old GPU's so it gives me more room price wise to throw in a SSD if I want to.

Sweet :3 it's still gotta download, so I'm using this time to debate what race/class I'm gonna go with x3 I'm completely new to the game, so I doubt I'd be much fun to play with lol.

 

I'll admit I'm not good at keeping a "character attention span" (read: I switch characters a lot) but if you ever need help with specific stuff like a quest or a dungeon run or whatevs, I have level 100s on both factions so just let me know.

Too bad my WoW account is tied to EU :c I have lvl 90 Worgen there, which just waits for money so I can buy expansion and game time.

Or I can start clean on US account xD Now that I'll get better Internet connection the lags won't be an issue I think. Still no money though. But starting new account gives me, I think, 2 months of free game time - one from Battle Chest (which is dirt cheap lol) and one from WoD... Or maybe it's just from Battle Chest? I have no idea.

 

Oh wow x3 I'm probably going to be doing a lot of character jumping in the first little while, made a bunch of characters of different races and classes that I'm going to try out x3 Oh, and Sent you a request on battlenet :3

 

Oh man, I didn't even think of doing recruit a friend with either of you lol. If anyone wants to do that, let me know. I've never had a passenger mount.

In case you don't know what it is, I would recruit you to play wow (which can be done if you have no us account or it's less than 30 days old) and then if you want, I can level with you and we get 300% bonus to experience. Also, if you buy two months of time, I would get to choose an in game mount.

I repair laptops at my job.
Today I just fix a Laptop with a i7 CPU, 32 GB Ram 250 GB SSD for the OS, and 2 TB of storage on 2 HDDs. Also it has a Nvidia video card with its own 3GB of ram.
