A quick update for those who are interested:

Mo and I have finally set a firm date for our wedding. It's going to be November 28th, here in Las Vegas.

Now.........to save up enough money to buy our wedding bands.

I wish I could be there to attend the wedding, but my best wishes and congratulations must suffice :p

I just had someone tell me, completely seriously, that the International Space Station and all of Earth's satellites aren't actually there. That also asserted that the only reason you can see them through telescopes is because the government projects them into the sky using holographs.

I asked them what exactly they're projecting the holograph's onto, because otherwise it's just shooting light off into space. Apparently there's just a big glass dome over the Earth and the government is keeping it a secret.

    Thank you
Yeah, yet another reason for instantaneous transportation, anywhere on earth (aka: the 'Star Trek' Transporter).

Wait.........a glass dome.....over the entire earth? Who do they think could build such a thing?

I do. Lies make their life exciting. It's much more interesting to believe the government has a secret program, that involves lasers and deception and conspiracy, than it is to believe in the reality of rockets and mass/force equations and the sheer, slow, boring difficulty of engineering rockets and working with slide rules to plot orbits. It's much more interesting to believe that Obama is going to create havoc in Texas than it is to believe that our military just needs big swaths of land to do boring practice drills.

It's much more interesting to believe that socialism, applied hard enough, will make us all equal and still run some sort of cornucopia machine. It's much more interesting to believe that capitalism, applied hard enough, will generate enough wealth that even those at the bottom of the power curve will have so much stuff they won't have anything to complain about. It's dreary and boring to imagine our current compromise of using socialist programs to alleviate suffering and capitalist programs to encourage progress, all overseen by a civilian system that requires annual tinkering among well-meaning people to adjust to reality, to tip the balance as needed to keep either side from running away. The idea that we have to keep working, year in and year out, to get the consent of our neighbors on how to allocate resources and maintain liberties, is dreary and dull.

It's not like the government doesn't have secret plans. I don't think that there's a big dome over the earth and they want to give us some fancy light shows. Of course, if anyone could do it, I'd say Elon Musk would find a way.
But I do believe that the some military installations have technology that is 50 years ahead of what we currently have. I have nothing to back this up with.

probably, but then again, THAT'S THE POINT OF DEFENSE R&D!!!! why release the best tech to people who will either misuse it or use it to make your job harder when you can keep it and keep the advantage over potential enemies

Oh yeah, they do have some advanced technology, like they're working on muscle augmenting technology. A machine that you strap to your arms and legs that does the lifting for you (granted Japan did that first though, and the one the Americans have is pretty inferior).

As for the dome thing, it's literally impossible. the gravity of the thing constantly pulling in towards the Earth from every point would cause it to crash in on itself, the helium that we're losing would collect up at the dome if it didn't, we wouldn't get meteors unless they could break the dome, which would again cause more falling glass. It would also trap all the heat inside and due to the curvature of the ball the sunlight would probably cook us all alive like ants.

Wellllll, Dome. Now, granted, it's just a city not the entire earth, the cost involved are insane AND it's only an idea in theory, it does open the door for solutions, workarounds, other ideas.
Not saying that we have a strong enough reason to build one nor have the means to do so but there are people thinking this shit up.

Oh yeah, a city-dome is definitely doable, though it would cost a fortune in construction and upkeep. There would also have to be a large number of studies done on the logistics of the thing before it could be built, like how they're going to avoid baking themselves from the heat not leaving the dome, or suffocate themselves from all the carbon emissions.

The problems I mentioned are more for a space dome over an entire planet. The person who told me this believes the dome is naturally occurring by the by, not man-made, and all planets have natural domes.
