Well we tried talking about the issue and getting people to engage the concept of not being shitty to women and gamers proved to be unimaginably infantile and pathetic. Don't assume that because you can't think of a solution the problem isn't still significant.

no, I know it's a significant problem, same as world peace, world hunger, homelessness, climate change, water issues in the southwestern US, the occupation of the Crimean peninsula, and a lot of other things, but just like those things nothing seems to work

Here is my viewpoint on why harassment occurs in gaming. Nerdy gamers are used the social stigma that other members of society will not accept them. So when a girl shows interest in what they are doing they don't know how to deal and lashs out. Or they get over welmd that a person of their sexual interest has something in common with them they let the little head talk

So your take on complex problems is "I don't see how to solve them so therefore, they're not worth talking about." Gotcha.

@SnowLycan The sexism is especially bad in voice chat. I'd wager about 50% of games have someone making comments about snow's voice (and a good chunk of those are pretty rude.)

That might be viable like, 5 or 10 years ago, but gaming just isn't a nerd thing anymore. It's something that's just becoming more and more widespread. That actually makes the rampant sexism even worse in my opinion, it reflects negatively upon more than just a single demographic and shows that it has quite an overwhelming presence.

That said, I don't think that sexism in online gaming is quite the same as sexism in person. Online gaming offers anonymity, as do many facets of online communications. You can have a voice modulator so that even your voice is unrecognizable and all of a sudden you don't have to worry about people finding out that you're acting like an asshole. People who otherwise would never even think of saying the things that they do, or would simply never say them aloud out of either politeness or fear of judgement, are given the chance to vent their frustrations and let go of their usual restrictions. I know I've said a fair number of things online that I would never even consider saying to a person directly.

Ok fine, since we're still talking about it somewhat. I'm not going to go over what others have already said that I agreed with by liking it. Just my two cents from a bit over a decade of gaming.

I was homeschooled. Got into gaming purely because I wanted to, in a social vacuum basically. Didn't go to public school until I was 13, which is when I learned to deal with people.

As far as "my gaming experience as a woman" goes, there has been a bit of change over the years. Around 2009, if people I met in online gaming found out I had a boyfriend, they'd first assume I was gay, then allow the possibility of me being female. Always did find that interesting. In later years, if people found out I was female they'd ask if I was single. Very recently, I had someone in a guild friend me and talk my damn ear off until they realized I wasn't interested in any kind of relationship, and then they put me on ignore and I think left the guild. I've never had any real flak over it, just very awkward people.

I've had no issues in person other than guys taking a while to grasp the actual extent to which I've been and am still a gamer. Many times I've played more/older game titles than they have, or have logged more hours on the game in question. It's not something I tend to have conversations about unless it's something I'm interested in and someone else brought it up first. Some of the people who actually know me have termed me along the lines of "she's a dude with a vagina" (actual quote from one friend). Which is a bit odd, since it implies that girls don't get as into game lore and quality story as I do. But whatever.

Worst related pet peeve: guys who act like a female isn't a gamer unless she has played and knows everything about every single game title created in the world ever. As if they would live up to such idiotic standards about gaming or anything else.

This peeves me in general. There's a huuuge variability in types of gamers (using this term loosely as anyone who plays video games for fun.) Using myself as an example: I game in a "depth over breath," sort of way. I have over 400 hours in the souls series. 250+ in skyrim. ~300 in diablo 3. 800+ in Xcom (sooo excited for the sequel!) Very likely over 1000 in League of Legends, and over 550 *days* played in final fantasy XI. I know a lot about those games, but anything else? Not so much. Even among those games, I couldn't give you more than a general outline of the lore. It's not an aspect that stays in my memory, and is probably ignored by plenty of other gamers.

If I was asked about games outside those? Well, I probably won't know much of anything. Getting haughty over someone's ignorance in a field as vast as the world of gaming is silly. Anyone who does just wants to feel important.

    Really? Oh boy...
Well, least we have our own section! I imagine sales will simply move to some 3rd party site.

here's the thing, people say you can't change the whole world, but a single generation, a single group, a single person; if you can leave them better off when you go then they were when you came, then you've changed the whole world for somebody .

no, more of a "I'm sick of people getting together to circle jerk about ideas that only serve their own interests and that generally fuck over anyone else but them so instead of helping it polarizes people where nothing actually helpful happens without one side or the other torpedoing it out of spite and no compromises can be reached"

Comments to this effect don't help the problem you're complaining about, just saying. Not mad, just being blunt.

I know, what I'm trying to get at is it's likely these sorts of problems will never be solved because everyone has a solution but they don't work together
