today I turned in a little instructional booklet thing I had to draw on how to make a wooden cabinet. everyone in the class liked it and a few said they might try to make it, I'm feeling pretty good, then...
her: "so why did you choose this as the focus of your piece
me: "because it's something I like to do"
her: "well don't you think it would have been more socially responsible to have picked a different topic"
me: "okay, what is that supposed to mean?"
her: "well this is well done and all but I feel like you're just trying to project an image of an ingrained male archetype"
me: "okay, well the instructions were to pick something you like, and I did"
her: "well that would be fine, but I don't like how this reinforces gender roles"
me: "okay, what the fuck? how is this reinforcing gender roles? this class is mostly girls, and almost the entire class said they might try to build this"
her: "first off, don't assume everyone in here who appears female to you is a girl, and second, it reinforces gender roles because it's the kind of topic that someone would expect a man to pick"
me: "so if I do anything I enjoy that seems to be stereotyped as something a guy would do it's a problem?"
her: *snarky tone* "well I didn't say THAT, but it does send a problematic message"
me: "so me doing what I enjoy is 'problematic'?"
her: "no, but it depends on the situational context"
me: "so it's wrong for me to make an instructional booklet that isn't specifically directed at anyone?"

me: "so then what would be an appropriate situational context then?"

As for myself I'm just sitting here tired as all hell from not getting any sleep.

 

I have a day off with so much to do. xP Mountains of laundry, have to set up this new wireless thingy, bring the old thingy back to the cable company (or find a box to ship it in), lunch would be nice, have to bring stuff to the dump. Of course none of the places I'm going to are anywhere near each other.

 

Got a great job lead with pizza hut as a delivery driver making $13+/hour, but my mom said no because I'd have to use her car and her insurance would go up.

I suppose that's fair, just wish it wasn't the first promising lead I've had in months =3=
