I may sound like a bit of a jerk, but when faced with a death in the family or something of the sorts and talking to a business associate, the professional thing to do would simply be to say that there was a family emergency, rather than going into detail about what happened. It avoids this sort of confusion/awkwardness.

I agree... I would have understood because a family emergency is a family emergency, and it wouldn't take away from the subject at hand too much.

And if they're back at work they should be ready for it. Also sometimes people need the day to day to keep their mind out of the slumps.

I've been a manager for 10 years and I still don't know how to feel comfortable with these conversations.

The way I usually handle it is to show sympathy, then return to a dispassionate business conversation. It feels schizoid, even to me, and I often go home later and engage in activities designed to get my mind off of it, because if I don't, I will obsess about how in a terrible person.

Ugh, I hate doing dishes. Oh well, someone has to do them.

    How's everyone today?

Rough stomach cramps and nausea, ugh. Figured I wouldn't be able to stop curling into a ball today but my body decided otherwise, so I guess at least I'm up for now, despite being incredibly stupid.

"We are born from the Earth and to it we must return."

That's what I usually tell people when they've lost someone. I really don't want to share my opinion about death as you ladies and gentlemen would be scrolling for quite a while.

In other news: Need a haircut. Shower first, then heading out.

Pretty much, we all die eventually, but with Robin I think it's more or less that he was this wonderful person who gave millions moments of happiness and the ability to escape whatever reality through his work who was, quietly, in so much pain, enough to take his own life. I grew up with his work, my best childhood memory is watching Flubber, and he definitely helped me not feel like I was sinking with all the shit that happened after our move to North Carolina, and having struggled and dealt with depression previously his death really hit hard despite not even knowing the man. Just goes to show depression isn't something to fuck around with.

I guess I'm more of a dick than I thought cause my first reaction was "So just give me the information I need and then deal with your shit." I do empathize with that pain and I understand that the world goes fuckside down when shit like that happens, but if it's business and I don't have a relationship beyond business with you, I don't care what the details are. Family emergency is all I need to hear and then we move on.

I think you navigated the email/situation the best way possible. A simple condolence, in a business setting, is all that really is needed and is still polite. Definitely no need to say anything that would make the other person continue to pour their heart out to you. I hope your meeting was finally scheduled though!
Also, how long does it normally take BD to answer a ticket? I sent one in on Friday.

Thanks. Still makes me feel awkward.
And your guess is as good as mine. I have been waiting since Thursday.

He was a very liked person who will be missed by many. A very funny personality and charming manner.

Like I said in my previous post, I'll always remember him as Genie as that was my favorite Disney movie when I was a little derp.

Yeah, that's a tough spot to be put in @DameKathryn, but you handled it well. I wouldn't worry about it.

With all this talk of Robin Williams, I've yet to hear anyone mention his role in the movie Awakenings. I never really liked most of his other work, but this Awakenings is one of my favourite movies.
