The Video Game Thread

Damn you, I was going to post this a while ago but I didn't know where to put it! But hot damn~

Okay, so as popularly requested, here is my...

ANIMAL CROSSING: HAPPY HOME DESIGNER REVIEW!

So first thing's first, what is it?

It is NOT comparable to a classic Animal Crossing. It's a game that revolves completely around the home designing aspects of the AC series of games. This may not be for everybody, but if you're like me and spend more time on your home and shopping than you do talking to villagers, then this is a good game for you.

What have they improved on?

They've made AMAZING improvements to the home building process. They've added a few more furniture items, and vastly expanded how every item can be used. They've also improved the UI, allowing you to use the touch screen to position your furniture in a room. This streamlines the process immensely, and feels really well integrated into the gameplay, to a point that I don't think it would be as playable without it. They've also added new categories of furniture that probably wouldn't have worked in previous generations.

So what else is new about the game?

A lot! There are some features I don't want to go into, because they're a nice surprise if you're not expecting them, but I can say they've implemented Amiibo cards and Play Coins in a way that makes sense, fits in perfectly with the gameplay, and actually encourages you to go out and get more without punishing you for NOT collecting them (in the case of the Amiibo cards).

What about the game did you not like?

Basically, there's not much to do outside of home designing that isn't walking around places you've designed. There's also not much socializing you can do with the animals. The narrative seems to dry up pretty quickly as well, but that's to be expected of a game of this nature, and it may pick up further on in the game. There also isn't an overworld to explore, but I suppose that's just a personal dislike of mine.

Oh, and for a game about you getting a job designing homes, you don't get to design (or have) your own home, and don't seem to get paid...

Is this game worth buying?

This game is definitely worth the $50 I paid for it. It has a lot of recycled assets, but the feel of the game is something totally unique, and I'm a fan of what they've done here.

I thought @vahaala was joking about Russians and csgo. But ...no...all my matches involved Russians today and one of those matches was in complete Russian. No English what so ever. Though when they died they kept saying that bad word vahaala taught me.

The top 4 have a sparkly shine to them.

 

Yeah, all the special character ones do that.

Also, you got a way better selection than I did! I got mostly ugly villagers.

 

I was really surprised how many nice ones I got out of the four packets I brought. There was one in the game to but I haven't taken that one out of its packaging.
Though the shop assistant even gave me a free animal crossing card collection poster to.

 

Yeah, I got the poster too.

I REALLY HOPE THEY COME OUT WITH AN EXPANSION, CAUSE I DON'T SEE WHITNEY.

 

There are 3 more series to be released. Series two is already out in Japan.

 

Okay so that means for PS4 I need to get.... Fallout 4, No Man's Sky, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Mad Max, Dragon Age Inquisition, Assassin's Creed (Unity & Syndicate), Zero Dawn, and now.... Far Cry Primal....





Oh yeah and I still need to buy the PS4..... ._.

 

You're not the only one darling. I still have to save up so I can get one to.

 

This is why consoles aren't going to last... Even when they do have good content, there's such a high entry cost that plenty of people don't even bother.

I mean seriously, my most advanced console is a Wii... not even a Wii U. It's just so prohibitively expensive to upgrade, and then it's prohibitively expensive to get new games.

 

It would cost me the same to build a high end PC and buy all the games, plus the lifetime maintenance and upgrades for the PC to keep it running, solve problems, and modernize it make it a moot point. Gaming is a luxury and there's no cheap road to it.

 

Yep, I really want the games on PS4 and XB1, but I really don't want to buy the actual consoles. I can miss out on a few exclusives for now over dropping a few hundred on each console. Hell, for the prices of those two combined, I could update my gaming PC with cash to spare.

 

The difference is that you're going to want to own a PC anyway.

 

Friday when I get paid, I pre-order Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void.

 

Pffft, N64 and GameCube all the way... PC doesnt even have games you can wavedash in.
