it's basically tumblr trying to make average everyday things seem more unique and edgy, like being demisexual. most people only feel romantic attraction to people they know well. if you really want to see some weird shit check out http://mogai-lexicon.tumblr.com/
speaking of which it's my college's "coming out week" and a couple bi students were turned away from an event but they let in someone who "sexually identifies as halloween" instead of everyone focusing on what they are, how about they focus on what they do to actually advance equality and not just act like a bunch of children trying to make the coolest superhero

hmmm, I unno, demisexual seems like a real thing imo. Some ppl can sex up someone they literally just met without a shred of emotion (though I don't know if there is a name for that), but its more than sensible there are people who can only feel sexually attracted to someone only after a strong emotional bond has been established

now that right there is interesting because I've seen demisexual described as "don't want to have sex with someone unless I know them really well" and "I can't feel emotional attraction to someone unless I know them very well"

I just find obsessively labeling every last little thing in human sexuality strange since people will always find some new way to make it different, I've seen kinks labeled as sexualities and genders, and sexualities and genders labeled as kinks. it's like you need to carry around an encyclopedia to talk to people about sex stuff using the 'proper' terms instead of saying "hi, I like this, I like you, would you like to..."

heh well I can tell you right now, noooooothing in this world is 100% agreed on anywhere but we as people seem to need to create clarification to get the number as close to 100% as possible. I'm sure there are still ppl who believe the earth is flat, but someone once told me a thing about how labels are a necessary evil. Imagine if you will that someone lines up 25 beakers of clear liquids on a table and tells you you must choose one and drink it, no sniffing, swirling or testing it, just straight up down the hatch. Only one of the beakers has plain water, the rest are hazardous chemicals that will either make you sick or kill you outright.

I remember when labels weren't a thing, when people were just people, when your gender or orientation didn't matter, because it wasn't an issue as long as you weren't an asshat.

Then Tumblr came along, and the Tumbletard army grew.

hmmmmmmmmm I'm hesitant to put stock in that. The "that didn't exist until the internet came along" argument doesn't seem right.
For instance, my parents went on a verbal tirade once for me talking to strangers online because of course everyone on it are rapists and killers, but in all honesty those kinds of ppl existed before the internet and wouldn't rape or kill me any less if I had met them in a grocery store or starbucks instead of the internet. Maybe it only seems like this label stuff is new because before the internet there was no exposure to it, like having only a candle in a dark place verses a flood light, you can just see more in front of you these days.

or maybe butts, I dunno >_>

okay, but make the beakers of liquid sentient and allow them to label themselves and it still wouldn't help if you didn't understand what their label meant and any time you asked you got the pat response of "EDUCATE YOURSELF!" lol, chemistry would be way more interesting

if you put a label on someone else that 95% of people can understand you're seen as an asshole, if you label yourself but treat everyone who doesn't know what your own label means like shit you're treated like a victim

@Misskin : I'd say once the Internet and different social media sites started coming around, things like that spread very, very quickly. Sure information existed before, but I think we can all agree that it wasn't widely known to the majority or even talked about before the Internet came about.

Not just information, but communication as well. Chat rooms, forums, things like that. Everything became easier for people, both for good and bad reasons.

I also have to agree on @scalie 's point.

I get what you're saying, but that's all just part of the messy labeling process. You have to go with the most widely accepted terms, if someone gets offended it's usually because they're insecure, disagree with the label, consider themselves the police of their entire group or take joy in trying to make people look stupid. There is no one size fits all, someone will always have a problem with a label. Hell, half the people in my family will be offended if you call them black but the other half will be offended if you call them African American, there is no winning there is just doing your best

and that's the key to it all, looking in at the insanity and then shrugging and moving on with your life to do something that defines yourself rather than think up words

basically instead of people making their lives fit whatever labels they have they can just live their lives. the old "human doing over human being" argument, that what you do matters more than what you say. that sort of stuff. I'm bi but my entire life doesn't revolve solely around my sexuality. blah, it's late and i'm starting to ramble

Well thanks to all the sexual labelling I now know I'm not broken just "Asexual "
Before I was like there must be something wrong with me, why is everyone so determined to put me with someone. If I refused a guy I must have been gay, that's how society labelled me. But now I can just say I'm asexual and everything is ok.

Now thats what im talking about Snow! The labels true purpose are to help folks figure themselves out.

I also have to say that just because me and others don't feel the need to label and feel perfectly comfortable without them, doesn't mean we should expect the same of others. We can't say something doesn't matter just because it isn't relevant to us.

I've just been reading stuff like this including, and I'm not kidding: greysexual, Cupiosexual, Apothisexual, neutrois, cancegender and oneirogender. I give up trying to keep track of them.

I don't disagree, but I find that some of these labels already have names and definitions or are completely normal behaviours, people (mostly on Tumblr) just find a way to invent a "cooler" word for it. Often I find that these unusual terms are only used by one or a few people, so it's not really anything to do with community a lot of the time, in my experience.

Not at all, all grabbed from people using them seriously (I assume). Also, "Greysexual: sometimes having sexual attraction and/or feelings, but usually not. Generally asexual but perhaps capable of sexual desire under certain conditions, e.g. love or romance."

    Well DH is acting strange.
It's telling me I got 2 different trophies, "The Crowd Goes Wild" (Your content being liked 1000 times) and "1 Year" (self-explanatory) which equal up to 60 points.
Here's the strange bit, it appears that I'm the only one who has received these trophies despite there being other people who've been here as long and have received the same thing.
    This is weird. o_O
