Some may remember me talking about possibly getting a job at an escape room.
An escape room is a room where you and a group of people get locked inside, and have to search the room to find and solve puzzles to figure out the code to unlock the door. Fun game if you’ve never tried it.
So I go to apply for a Game Master* position, and get brought in for an interview the same day. Interview goes very well, and I’m asked when a good time for me to come in for training would be. At the time I had a couple family and charity events going on, so I told them I’d call and let them know. Once I had a clear couple days, I call and get their call center and tell them my schedule. The call center informs me the owners (the ones I was interviewed by) are on their honeymoon in Europe, so they’d leave my message for them when they got back.
Fast forward a week after that, I don’t hear back from them. So I go up there again and they inform me that their call center performed terribly, not passing along messages and not answering customer questions, so they were fired. Fine, my calls didn’t get through. That same day I speak to them again, they show me around a little more and tell me about their plans for expansion, meaning they’ll need more employees. I remind them of my interest in working for them, as escape rooms are a growing industry and I want to be a part of it, maybe even claim a portion of the industry myself. I’m also given the owners’ numbers, and asked to text them when I can come in for training.
I texted them two weeks ago, along with an email in case there was another problem through phones, telling them I’ve available anytime. I never hear from them. So I go up again today, and ask if they received my text and to figure out what the problem was. One of the owners say she did receive my initial text, but not my text letting them know I was available anyday. They also had some appointment to go to today, so they wouldn’t be able to sit down and figure out what happened.
Here’s the thing:
1) She lied. We both own iPhones, and anyone who owns one will tell you that it informs the sender when the receiving end receives and reads the message.
2) My email was never replied to, and as far as I know, never even opened
3) They have all my contact information, phone and email. There’s no excuse for either one of them or their assistants to not contact me.
At this point I have no interest in working for them. I have tried multiple times to contact them, only to get no answer, forcing me to go up there in person. I have expressed great interest in working for them, as it can be mutually beneficial to both their company and myself. I have been more than willing to prove that I can do the job and do it well. If they want me as an employee, they can get in touch with me.
*A Game Master is the person who briefs and debriefs each team before and after their time in each puzzle room. He/she is essentially the host/hostess when parties come. They’re also the ones who give little hints when the team is stuck, and makes sure everyone is having a fun, challenging time and make sure no one gets frustrated and loses excitement. Like Jigsaw from the Saw franchise, only without the torture.
