    I'm about twenty hours in since Friday, most of it was spent building/maintaining my settlement at The Castle and Sancutary. I love the Sims 5!

    In all seriousness though, it's good so far. I haven't progressed much in the story, I just got to Diamond City. The time I'm not spending on my settlements I'm doing quests for both the Minutemen and the Brotherhood of Steel.

    Couple of massive frame rate drops, and some environments not loading in, but other than that it runs smooth.

    Dogmeat loves to get in my way when I'm indoors, so I'm constantly either jumping over him or yelling at him to get out of the way. He's great in combat though. I recorded a clip of him running up to a suicide Super Mutant, surviving to explosion, and running back to me, tail wagging and everything.

    Beat the game, just wandering around doing some cleanup. Currently standing next to a bed causing my legs to rapidly spasm while I catch up on the forum. I'll post some photos of my character momentarily!

    Playing a badass old lady who loves all weapons and power armour. Specialties are a combat rifle and a super sledge. Everything else is secondary. 211ee5ae-5fb9-42ca-8edb-e38b3d0ad1eb.jpg 88ccb9ad-42ad-4673-856b-83cc1d67638b.jpg

    I've heard they made Dogmeat unkillable because they said "Well, people will just reload anyway, so there's no reason to make him killable."

    I'll post some thoughts about the game, focusing a lot on the institute, so I'll use a spoiler because most of the game's twist will be ruined and a lot of the ending will be spoiled too! So DON'T OPEN THE SPOILER UNLESS YOU WANT ONE ENDING SPOILED!

    I really like how the game made me think different about synths. I ended up siding with the institute, primarily because I was playing a mother and decided to be with my son. There was something about listening to my lady throughout the game, she was so pragmatic and cool about everything, so stoic, but as soon as her son became the topic my lady got sorta weepy. So that conveyed a lot of maternal love to me. So upon discovering Shaun's fate, I couldn't help but decide that despite my work with the railroad, and despite all my headway with the brotherhood, I couldn't help but side with the institute. At least temporarily, to see where things went. Ultimately, I felt pretty guilty when I had to wipe out the railroad. I literally waltzed into a room full of my friends who trusted me and had to gun them down one by one. And after that? I destroyed an entire army of Brotherhood soldiers. It was so out of character for my lady, I felt pretty sick killing off the railroad, but the brotherhood was less painful. They were a military force dedicated to pushing a certain agenda, and had already abandoned any humanitarian credit Elder Lyons had earned them. Suddenly they were the same narrow, xenophobic, imperialist army I recognized so well in New Vegas and remember from the older games. Even the fact that the Prydwyn's reactor was taken from Rivet City.... I just know the locals didn't hand it over willingly. I knew they gave their lives to their cause and were proud to die for it. But the railroad, I don't think they could have suffered a worse fate.

    Now back to Synths. I started off with railroad missions that really coloured the synths as people, fleeing some kind of enslavement, fearing persecution and trying to avoid recapture. The institute scientists really portrayed the synths as purely mechanical facsimiles. Now there are all kinds of arguments here about intelligence and sentience and free will that I don't care too much about. Being inside the institute really coloured the synths a different way. There are three kinds wandering the institute;

    1. The Gen 1s which are just terminator-esque skeletons performing odd jobs.
    2. The Gen 2 skin-wearers with minimal intelligence and minimal free will.
    3. The Gen 3 infiltrators with perfect human appearances.
    The thing is, because you see so much of the first two in the institute, it makes it quite easy to stop seeing the Gen 3s as true people. No matter how many times Shaun tells you they're not people, they're just machines meant to mimic people, that's not what ultimately sells it to me. It's spending time working with them while I contemplate their intelligence. Suddenly there's a logical progression from the simplest machine intelligence to the perfect copy of a human being. There's a relationship between the three synth generations that really makes them appear different from humans. Suddenly I felt rather silly for doing railroad missions, trying to save things that were programmed to behave like human beings, and ultimately garnered sympathy, precisely because that's what human beings do. We are social and have empathy and connect with and impact others. Machines designed to do that aren't the same automatically. Sure we can extend our definition of a person to cover them, but we don't actually HAVE TO. There's no real imperative to treat anything like a human being, ethically, morally, socially, just as there is no imperative to treat actual human beings as human beings beyond the practical consequences. I'm always of the school of thought that morals and ethics derive from what kind of world we want to live in, I don't believe in moral absolutes. The great thing about synths is we can actually design their morals and ethics in ways that we can't for ourselves. Even with the advanced tech in the fallout world, human nature is still beyond our ability to engineer. We always have biological imperatives and social pressure, but if we wanted to tell synths that killing is never acceptable for any reason, even self defence, we could do it. If we wanted to tell them that synths are superior to humans in every way, they would agree, just as they would if we told them they're inferior. They would obey that rule without question, because they're machines, only as smart as their design allows, whereas we are organisms, slowly and experimentally evolved to reproduce and build thriving populations that take care of us and our kids. If we designed synths to have no sympathy, they wouldn't, but we've evolved it for multiple evolutionary benefits, so it's a pretty strong impulse for us, even when co-opted for other purposes, like taking care of pets and trying to "free" synths. The point is, sentience isn't something magical that automatically requires some kind of reverence and protection from us. I'm not saying the synths aren't people or aren't intelligent, I'm saying so what if they are? It doesn't change the fact that they're machines designed to be whatever we want. We can't just solve our social problems technologically yet. We have to solve them with compassion and empathy and cooperation. But synths don't need that. Synths only need you to flip a switch, and all their problems are solved. We could flip a switch that makes them permanently happy,or make it impossible for them to suffer. Would that the miserable human race had so much freedom from the bonds of our social and psychological evolution.

    Got a perk that allows me to breath under water, currently walking under a river in my hot pink power armour while listening to DIon's The Wanderer, enjoying how my steps sync up to the beat. I was too lazy to look for a bridge

    Anyone play the classic games? 2 is by far the best of the series I think.

    I dislike 3 and 4. New Vegas is ok though.
