Ever since my doctor upped my insulin dosage I've noticed I put on a few pounds. Time to start running and swimming again.

Just have to get a new suit. My current one is a little... tight.

Are there scumbags in the world?
Are there greedy people in the world?
Are there greedy scumbags who really don't give a fuck who they screw over as long as they get ahead in the world?

If all diseases were cured, doctors, practically every medical profession involved in diseases would be out of business. Nobody needs their antibiotics, nobody needs their pills, nobody needs to pay them. Now, that IS an extreme/fantastical analogy but the concept is there. Why would big companies, that are making billions per year off of drugs and pharmaceuticals, want the source of their income, people with illness, to stop coming to them and buying more?

It's part of the root of the problem with America, more, more, more money. Can't allow the money to stop flowing in, even as it's value steadily declines and prices go up. Can't be assed to care about who's gonna suffer from a screwup or a slight, and heck if there's a way to profit off of their suffering, all the better.

I honestly wish I could dismiss it as some tinfoil talk like you so readily do, and maybe that's because I live in a country with more issues that it refuses to solve. But the reality is, the world is fucked up, America especially is fucked up.

    Colorful post lol

But in the full seriousness, I have to agree with Rassy. Besides, it's not killing people that's profitable, but treating them with the cures companies produce. Nobody wants a dead customer, because dead customer=no money, but this is also true for (effectively) healed customer. Who would need to buy cancer cure if he was cured fully already?

The root of all the problems isn't really the money itself, just human nature. There might be units out there that genuinely care about humanity and are doing charity work and stuff, but that's just like a drop in the ocean. And humanity in general is greedy.

That's just naïve, pessimistic, uninformed and really doesn't stand up to any amount of investigation. I'm going to find an oncologist I trust for honesty and let them explain why you're both wrong.

Might be checking out an apartment for rent with S. next week! Hopefully the manager replies to my request soon. It looks like a nice place, and pets are allowed. I'm tentatively excited about this - I've never gone apartment hunting, much less with a significant other.

Naive and uninformed how? You keep using those words like they complete your argument, instantly invalidating whatever someone else has to say.

Tell me. Are you aware of the Martin Skreli fiasco late last year? You know, the guy who bought out the entire manufacturing process to Diaprim, the STANDARD for the treatment of Toxoplasmosis for over 60 years, as well as used to treat compromised immune systems such as AIDS victims (but sadly not cure them)? The guy who then, after asserting this monopoly over it's production and sale (which despite being illegal in the US, the government did nothing to break it up), increased the price per pill from $13.50 to $750?

Tell me. Have you ever seen the number of times a new "wonder drug" is pushed out by a company with widespread advertisement, only to see some advertisement by a law firm a couple of years later saying that you can jump on a class action against the makers of that pill if someone you know DIED from it? Implying a substantial number of cases, on top of other serious side effects that also qualify. And then, a year later, the same company is pushing out ANOTHER such pill?

Tell me that most of the drug companies in the US, in MY OWN COUNTY, do not prioritize money over treating illness. Tell me that the legal system here is not seriously skewed in favor of big business. The ONLY reason I am not saying dismissive statements like "Someone from Canada wouldn't understand" is because unfortunately many across the world are much more aware of our issues than most Americans. Most Americans who believe it's all fine and dandy, are the ones who are naive and uninformed. I'm quite saddened however that you feel the need to use fuzzy statements to dismiss others who say life isn't sunshine and rainbows.

In other, more happy news. Got the keys to the new place I've been trying to get. It's not much but simply being my own place with reasonable access to employment opportunities is more than I'm used to, so I'm definitely using this to move forward. Hopefully I'll find myself in better moods too, and be able to draw without the stress and drama of family members.

What I'm most confused about is how you can continue to state that money is a driving force in pharmaceutical prices and the current medical market and then somehow manage to completely miss the fact that a cure for any cancer would be worth literal fuckloads of money. A naïve person assumes nobody would sell a cure for cancer because somehow shitty treatments that cost a lot over a long term are more profitable by nature. A wise person recognizes that the smart move is to sell the cure for more than the total cost of the average amount we spend on the inefficient current treatment and continue selling the current array of ineffective treatments for a different price. I mean, I'm only using your own logic here, if the market is set up in such a way that the only driving force of the prices is greed (which it is) and the government does nothing to ensure fair prices for the public good (which it doesnt), what exactly is there to stop the exact same industry from selling a miracle cure that doesn't exist at a considerable markup? I'm not debating that the industry is greedy, or that profits are paramount. I'm just bewildered why that would stop anybody from selling something really effective at a high price inspired purely by greed. Hundreds of millions die from cancer every year, and you're telling me a market for people who will pay a remarkably high price to actually guarantee survival simply isn't of interest to the industry?

Like, I'm not even sure what you're arguing other than that somehow the industry hasn't found a way to sell a really good product that everybody will want.

Ironically, considering how many times I've been in the spectator's box watching the main event. I know how hilarious these can be from an outside view. :p

Again, you're missing the logic that the pharmacutical industry uses. "If we cure them, they won't be paying us for pills anymore." The only way they'd offer a proper cure for something these days, is to make the price so high, it can't reduce their current profit margins, every year billions of dollars of revenue. Which, even if they're lenient/generous would be such a price, that only the wealthier could afford; everyone else would be stuck with the pills we have now, only more aware of the bullshit and more upset. Think Elysium.

If they tossed out that cure, there'd be no profit down the road because they'd have no market for the products they make. The huge stack of cash for the cure may be bigger, but it's like the lottery; it doesn't last forever, especially if you start spending more than you used to. After that the only profit to be made would be whenever a new immigrant comes in and can AFFORD it or when a new person is born or is old enough for the treatment and their parents can AFFORD it.

An analogy of what I'm getting at with my second paragraph; private yachts are obviously prohibitively expensive, so much more than the regular motor boats many people have. So, only so many people have one. Now, imagine if for whatever reason, for analogy's sake, half of everyone LITERALLY needed a private yacht. I don't know why. You'd think profits for companies that manufacture private yachts would go through the roof, but there's not much of an increase in sales because, even though the number of people that NEED them increased, the number of people who can AFFORD them didn't. So, you won't see motor boat companies suddenly switching gears to make private yachts instead.

Finally, much to my annoyance, you keep throwing ad hominem at me, and you did the same with Val without even trying to explain your position other than "You're wrong". Go do some research about A. How business works in general, B. How America is currently run by the ethically unconcerned big business, C. how it's legal system is being tailored to protect big business wherever possible (Ag-Gag Laws, Trans-Pacific Partnership, the flaws in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, etc). Educate yourself on someone else's country before you go telling them how wrong and "naive" and "uninformed" someone who has lived there all their life is about their own country's flaws, and especially educate yourself on a subject before you go flinging around statements in the quest to "Be right".
You don't see me trying to tell YOU how Canada works, because I don't know, and trust me. I was that way when I was younger, it isn't worth making a fool out of oneself.
