So I bought a toy second hand about a week ago, it was one I've been wanting for awhile and it was a really pretty fade and I paid a lot for it. I haven't had a chance to use it yet, because as soon as I pulled it out of the box and the bag it was packed inside, I noticed an odor coming off of it. It's strong and enough to make my stomach turn, which is a huge turn off for wanting to use it. I've let it air out and I've washed it several times with both Dawn dish soap and with BD's foaming toy cleaner and the odor remains. What else can I do to try to rid of the smell???

yikes.. i'm afraid to ask what it smells like.. have you tried the 1 part bleach 9 parts water thing that BD recommends and then boiling it afterwards?

I used to manage a bar restaurant. We always used to put baking soda in a large bucket of hot water and soak our food safe silicone items (spatulas, basting brushes, etc). I don't see why this would be any different

I bought a toy a while ago on here from a user, when I got it and opened the toy out of the bag it smelled like cigarette smoke. I had to wash, soak it in a bleach solution and leave out to air many times before I got the smell out. It still sorta smells strange, but I just hope over time the smell will disapate completely.

I know someone also did a test where they gently dabbed some toothpaste on a toy that strongly smelled of cigarette smoke and left it overnight

Also, which company is the toy from? I know there was issues with a newer etsy shop using red glow powder which in turn made the finished toys reek of sulphur (rotten eggish smell)

I actually STILL have that Cerberus stuffed away in a drawer. XD I don't have the heart to get rid of my science experi - I mean, unfortunately-scented dingle. But I am VERY curious to see if there will be any long-term effects on a silicone toy that has sulfur compounds in it.

I had an xl chance that had an odor to it, it will fade over time, the best thing that helped was to scrub it good with shower mesh and some nice smelling soap. Also, wrap it in some blankets

Hey, seller here! I’m sorry to hear that the toy still had smell to it (I’m going to assume it would be residual cigarette odor, though smoking in the house is not permitted). It wasn’t for lack of trying, but I take full responsibility for not being more careful with the toy while I had it and will apologize wholeheartedly.

I’ve heard that baking soda, repeated washing and more bleach soaking can help. I, myself, soaked it in bleach and then boiled it for good measure. But being the one who smokes, I’m sure I couldn’t pick up on any discernible smell if I wanted to. :/ trying to kick the habit though, fingers crossed!

Anyways, I’m very sorry that I missed the mark on eliminating any smell. I’m very ashamed of that, and will use this to further sanitize and de-odor any toys I sell in the future. Definitely going to let them air out and have someone else check for any noticeable smell before trying to sell again.

As someone who lived with a smoker, I would lock things in a box with an open container of baking soda before anything left the house when donating clothes to goodwill and such. If that doesn't work, I've used mild-scented incense to mask the smell before, but at that point you're fighting smoke with smoke.

I will keep that in mind! I wish I was made aware that there was any problem when the package arrived so that I could’ve made up for it somehow, I’m always open to helpful constructive criticism! But from now on I’m going to start packaging any potential sell candidates with a lot of baking soda, and bleaching them regularly. I’ll have one of my partners smell test them for me as well, I’m very ashamed that this happened and I will not be letting it happen again.

A friend who moved recently had a toy that smelled of cigars. She said putting the toy in a bag of baking soda letting it sit a few days took the smell right away =-)!

    Will the other compounds in bleach besides Sodium Hypoclorite (5%) damage the BD silicone? I can name them here;
    Sodium Polyacrylate
    smaller amounts of:
    -Sodium Metasilicate
-Dimethoxysilyl Ethylenediaminopropyl Dimethicone (this one supposedly contains some silicon)

Will this 5% bleach solution also need a 1:9 ratio dilution with water?
    Thanks in advance

Yes, 1 to 9 ratio is recommended. Bleach in dilution is safe, that's why it's recommended.

For strong smells, I've boiled toys for 30 - 45 minutes with good results! I have a giant 8 gallon pot which I bought on Ebay for that purpose (IMO to boil toys you should use lots of water, not a tiny pot). No negative effects, and it does eliminate odors. I also use that pot *only* for toys - I don't like the idea of cooking food in the same pot I use for boiling toys.

Oh yeah one more thing... do NOT combine bleaching toys and boiling toys... if you boil bleach it creates a hazardous vapor that will damage your lungs. If you want to boil AND bleach, do the bleach soak first, then use soap and water to get your toy completely rid of bleach. THEN boil.
