I dreamed that I was back in second grade, and my teacher (who in real life was my 3rd and 4th grade teacher) gave us a really complex assignment, and forgot to give us some of the papers we needed. We kept telling him and after what seemed like hours of trying to convince him, he realized how he'd messed up. He asked me to go make copies of the paper he'd forgotten to give us, and for some reason the copy machine was on the 50th floor of the empire state building. For some reason, there were only two elevators. One was an antique elevator like you'd find in a hotel in the 20's, and the other was some sort of weird alternating paternoster lift escalator combo where each set of lifts went up a few floors, and all the individual steps were labeled so you knew what step to stand on if you wanted to be perfectly in line with the the floor you wanted to get off on. I remember it not having a large margin of error though, so I opted for the antique elevator. It took FOREVER to get up, but I eventually got to the 49th floor, where I accidentally got off. I knew it would take too long to wait for the single antique elevator again, so I took a look at the paternoster system. It scared the crap out of me to even try to get on that thing, because it had pretty big gaps of just open air to either side of the entrance where I could just fall to my death if I misstepped. I remember a bunch of people standing around the edge of the gap, which didn't even have a railing, and one guy even had his legs dangling over the edge. Then he dropped down the gap, but nobody watching freaked out, so I assumed he knew what he was doing. But that sealed the deal that I did NOT want to take the lift system, and I decided to explore the floor and look for a stairwell. I went through a bunch of antique wooden rooms, going up and down various stories by random ladders and antique stair cases, not once ending up on the 50th floor, and eventually finding myself in a huge library on the back side of the building somewhere on the 49th floor. There was this massive wooden statue attached to the end of an aisle of bookcases who was holding up a massive pillar candle which was braced against the load-bearing wooden beam in the center of the library. Well I did SOMETHING, I don't remember what, but at the time it seemed like it triggered the candle to snap into three massive pieces. Suddenly, all the support beams and wooden columns all over the library were cracking and splitting like balsa wood. I was running and trying to escape as the Empire State Building collapsed around me. I got out of the collapsing library by going up a ladder to the 51st or 52nd story. I remember escaping down collapsing floor after collapsing floor using the paternoster lifts, some sets of which had gotten de-synced or blocked to the point where there were rescuers sliding people out at the last moment as they went by. By the time I got down a few floors, I realized I didn't have my backpack, and went up to the top remaining floor, the 50th, (finally) to find it. I found it almost completely demolished. Other than about half of the story above still being intact, it was completely open to the sun. I ran around the backside of the 50th floor searching through rubble as construction crews with backhoes were clearing the rubble nearby. When I finally found my backpack, I woke up.
