Meh. I bought a new computer recently, a week ago. My old computer had crapped-out after 7.5 years and was still running XP. There were a lot of problems I was having with it anyway. A few months ago I had gotten a laptop (and it stopped working because me and laptops don't get along) that had Windows 8.1... I didn't like it. But... for this new barebones desktop (all I really need), it was only going to come with 8.1.
Whatever, I can deal with it or Windows 10. I remarked that I could possinly upgrade on the 29th to the salesman. He responded that "Oh, no, you can do it right now." Wasn't really up on current affairs it seems.
    ...well, what can go wrong?
I don't know yet. I upgraded a mere hour ago and so far no issues. But I'm sure I will come across a few in the week ahead good and/or bad. I have yet to try Microsoft Edge (replacement for Internet Exploder), for now I'm using Firefox... and occasionally Chrome for select sites.
I set up a custom installation... I don't want them collect a metric ton of my information and what kind of porn I'm into.

So did you upgrade, do you plan to upgrade, still using an older version or Linux.
    Or you know... a mac.

Right now I'm upgrading my laptop to give it a test run. Once I see how easy/difficult it is to configure the privacy settings, and make sure I like the UI, I'll likely upgrade my desktop as well.

I hate to say this but no matter what you do, MS has your guts. Read the EULA VERY CAREFULLY and you will discover that they have the rights to grab whatever data they want from your computer if you accept the license agreement which is required to use the OS. This kind of crap is why I ditched that shitfest a long time ago. Besides...they are pushing it hard and as a "free" upgrade. If you're not paying for a service, you're probably the product.

Of course, if someone really wants your data, they'll get it, so don't worry too much.

Well it's not like their going to use that data for nefarious purposes. I mean that man in black that's hiding in the bushes is probably just a sharply dressed gardener. The mysterious white van across the street... probably just visiting relatives.

...and Willow was never heard from again.

I upgrade to 10 on my desktop and I love it so far. I need to get a better mic for more Cortana use (and Windows Defender won't activate), but other than that I'm very happy with it.

Well, as some of you may remember, and some may not, Win 10 broke the sound on my laptop. I had to install a whole new sound driver to fix it too.

    So there's that.

I'm not sure if Win 10 did it, but now all my search engines have been switched to Bing (I use Google). I'm not fond of Bing at all. So I go into settings, I switched the default search engines from "web search" (which I guess is Bing), and delete it from the list and set Google as default.
Bing is still the search engine... it doesn't care what you set as your search engine.

Not sure if I matters but when I started Firefox Avast (anti-virus software) had a mesage about unsafe broswers and closed down firefox before I could do anything. Tried reopening it and it closed again. Gave it a minute and was allowed to open. With Bing.
It changed by Google Chrome too.

I'll have to try that one, Spybot has always been one of my go to programs.

Yeah I use to use Spybot S&D until it kept trying to update and failed to do so and wouldn't let me run a scan until it would update,

Stop fear mongering and start by reading the eula yourself instead of these hearsay someone-else-read-it-and-says-you-should-be-worried articles...

That part you are talking about is specifically about the windows app store and its content. (Note how they are talking about their Services, big clue there) If they notice you circumvent paying for their app store content, they can/will refuse you access to the appstore. Like duhh shoplifting will get you banned from that store too. (Same thing for the apple appstore, they can "refuse acces to their service to you at ANY time")

Same thing goes for the "always listening and monitoring". It is about Cortana, microsofts Siri contestant. Ofcourse it needs to be listening to be able to do semthing. Disable Cortana and nobody will be phoning home about your taste of porn. (Hint: al of that listening and information digestion disclaimer is also in the Siri AND safari eula)

Crazy shit about what companies can and will do incase of something-something has been in eula's forever, the fearmongering is nothing new either, just ignore it and click accept as always. (Because you didn't bother to read all the other stuff they can do either, so it's too late anyway)

Other than that, my experiences with 8.1 haven't been too great. We have it at work, and most of the time it's more of a pain to use than anything else. And since 10 is somewhat like 8.1 I'm holding off.. And I want to wait till they got rid of all the early bugs and have proper driver and all that jazz. Maybe then I'll try it.

Another issue I noticed with Win 10 on my laptop: Skype keeps asking me what program I want to open photos in from Skype. As far as I can find, there's no way to fix this, since Skype itself doesn't have a setting for this.

If anyone can help me fix that, that'd be great.

Feel free to give up your rights and freedom, I'll stick with Debian or a solid Linux distro that allows me to look at the source at any time. And fearmongering? Excuse me, I prefer to know the truth and I find it interesting to know exactly what they're getting away with.

I choose not to use services that go past my comfort zone. When targeted ads are embedded in some programs and can't be disabled, that's ludicrous. Telemetry cannot be turned off completely unless you purchase an enterprise license. Cortana can be disabled but trying to remove it completely cripples the OS. You cannot choose anything regarding updates...all done for you. Also, MS has the rights to your speech, cam, data you type, your typing patterns, your speech patterns and even the data on your disk if they have ways of discovering you have pirated software on your computer. This OS sandboxes people and profiles them and if you're OK with that, be my guest, but I can't be blamed for selfless ignorance.

Additionally, pirated data may be limited to MS' app store now but there's nothing saying that the pressure isn't on them to extend that capability OS wide. Not that I care, I use free software and I buy the stuff I want.

The only reason I can think of why this heap of shit is free is because Microsoft must have figured that they'll make enough if not more just off of selling your data then to have you pony up and spend the $100 or whatever it is they want for the OS. I don't like that.
The reality is they are a business and they are there to make money; they don't care about you or what you want and will push the envelope as much as possible.

The reason it's cheaper for them to make it free is to encourage people to upgrade, including a huge number of companies that don't update because "it's a waste of money". They mathed it out, and figured they would save more money having to write for fewer generations of their OS, and would make more because everything is cross-compatible, so people would be pretty likely to start putting proper MSO programs, etc, on their tablets and things. Because they don't have to modify the code for separate OS's, they don't have to spend that time or money, and it streamlines their ENTIRE production process.

They traded in for efficiency, simple as that.

computer started downloading windows 10 in the background, simple fix to stop it is just to end the GWX task in the task manager

EDIT: it's been several hours and the get windows 10 app hasn't started up again. seems like ending it through the task manager will keep it from starting again until a full computer restart

it seems GWX has something that restarts the process every few hours. found out how to delete the packet for it so it shouldn't start again. it won't allow you to delete it as is so you have to modify it's properties and take ownership of the file and all pertinent subfiles before you can get rid of it. only took about 3 minutes to figure out, now I don't have it popping up every 30 seconds asking me to upgrade now. I'm still pissed about the forced windows 8.1 update since it broke so much stuff for me. give me the choice to upgrade if I want to, great. keep pestering me to upgrade, fuck you. try to make it so I can't manage what's on my own machine, I'll burn your fucking house down, figuratively.
