Well...the way I see it, they'd be mutually exclusive from a practical standpoint. Probably from a financial standpoint as well, but like I said, aside from necessities and a few nice things here and there, and in game development licenses for the game engine if it's not free use or open source as well as artist and musician contracts/income ARE typically a necessity, I really don't care about money, so....
With Closed Betas, typically the beta testers get their copy of the game for free in exchange for testing and providing feedback for the developers. With Open Betas, typically everyone participating has to buy their copy of the game at it's beta phase, preferably at a lower price than what the finished product is planned to be sold for. From what I have seen of mob psychology in action on the internet and in a few rare cases in stores or at conventions, people are strange; they tend to get quite upset if they find out that a small group got something for free, and that they were not in that group and had to pay for it, let alone at full price. That.....is an outcome I'd find undesirable for my project. >_>
I mean, seriously.....people actually started slugging each other over a TV that was on sale at a Walmart this Christmas....not children or teenagers, but full grown adults in their 30s and 40s!
EDIT: My bad, it was Black Friday just after Thanksgiving, but still....completely unreal.
