Uh yeah? Representation and inclusiveness matter to people. Being a white male you have the advantage of being completely buried in people just like you in your media. A major theme in the discussion of feminism is how women are presented in media. The conclusion is basically that it would be nice if people could enjoy media without wondering why women and non-white people are so poorly represented in cultures that are by definition, multiethnic and at least HALF female.

The problem isn't that artists should be making art the way they want. There's nothing wrong, NOTHING WRONG with asking that artists try making something that non-white, non-male people can relate to. There is NOTHING WRONG with asking that artists appreciate that their work is in the hands of people different from them. MAYBE it's a good thing to tell a story outside the world of the white boy's perspective.

Here's what I don't understand. Why do you even care? I don't buy for a second that you're just looking out for poor artists trying to express themselves. What does it matter to you if your avatar is a girl or black? Does that in any way take away from your ability to enjoy the game or film? Is it so hard to accept that MAYBE, giving somebody else a chance to see themselves reflected in a narrative might be a good thing that doesn't actually cost you anything?

I'm not claiming games are making people sexist. That gamers can be sexist just like anyone is an indisputable fact. All I'm asking for, is some fair treatment for the rest of the people playing games who actually would appreciate seeing people of their own colour or gender in major works of media. It doesn't cost white male gamers anything that they can't afford to lose to add a little inclusiveness or representation to tthe media they care about. I'm not even going to get into the world of whitewashing or ableism. Gender and race representation in media are big enough without broadening the discussion.

Fortunately the roads were fairly quiet, but it was still troublesome.

It's thankfully not strep, but a nasty viral infection nonetheless. So no antibiotics. I pretty much just have to ride it out - drink a truckload of water, rest, pop a naproxen and cry for a while. Gargling salt water is supposed to help take the infection down too, but I'm not sure if we have any non-iodized salt.
Kind of just want to go back to bed now.

Eat some honey if you have some. Real honey naturally contains hydrogen peroxide, great at killing microorganisms. Pickle brine or just straight vinegar will also work a bit, though not necessarily as effectively.

Honey sounds perfect. I don't see any in the house though, maybe I can ask my partner to pick some up since he's already getting me some naproxen. Pickle brine though, that sounds pretty awesome, and I know we have some. Also it does seem like we have the right kind of salt for a salt water gargle. Whooooo

Would feel a lot better if all this wasn't doubled up with a migraine. Aleve should help me there too. Drinking some tea now though.

Sorry to bring this up again but I have to say yes! there is a lot of sexism in the gaming industry and there is a reason women are not often seen at these events.

Do you want to know why? because they are scared! You go into a room of guys and you are immediately a lamb to the slaughter. Especially if you are hot. You'll get the guys flirting with you to get into your pants but if you show no sign of interest that's when they'll turn on you.

Do you want to know how I know this. 4 years games programming and graphics design at uni. There were women that applied but lost their nerve after intro day due to harassment.

I tried really hard every year when the new students were arriving for enrolment. But after the first month ever year the females would quit due to harassment from males. I am the only female so far that has completed that course cause I stuck it out.

But sadly obviously never did my physici any good as I had a breakdown shortly after finishing my degree due to stress.

All because people haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

As I've said before I don't know when games were supposedly genderized to only one gender. Because to me they aren't they are universal. The only time I speak out about someone playing a game is when they are clearly not of the age to be playing it.

I have both @Wolfcat and @vahaala to back me up on sexism I receive while gaming and all I have to do is say a few words.

I actually came to say that everyone should watch this film. It's based on Irish folklore. It's beautifully animated and is a must watch film.

For the record, I think everybody could benefit from exposure to other cultures, the experiences of other ethnic groups and the experiences of the other genders. Japan is famously insular and closed to other cultures. I think they could probably use a LOT more exposure to the outside world.

And that's all I'm going to say about it.

and the solution is what then?
    1. impose strict quota systems on content and characters? (artists from former soviet states and Cuba would greatly disagree with that option)
    2. avoid any sort of confrontation (unavoidable really, I get plenty of 14 year olds with ADHD and an adderall addiction trying to piss me off when I'm talking with friends in a game about things me and my boyfriend want to do, but I don't let it get to me)
    3. grow a thicker skin
    4. get through it, start your own business and make a product line that matches your beliefs and let the market decide whether they want it or not

I've been feeling really down lately. Always exhausted, overworked, nothing to look forward to. I don't know how to get out of this funk.
